Orchids are at their most beautiful when they are in bloom, but unfortunately it doesn’t last forever and after bloom care for orchids. The main issues to be concerned with are, how do you care for the orchid once its bloomed, and how do you make sure it blooms again… Once the bloom has passed on cut the flower stalk about one inch from the base with a sharp knife or pair of scissors. Some people are concerned with disease at this point, if you like feel free to treat the cut section with some rubbing alcohol. Many think that cutting the stalk this low is a mistake but this will ensure that the next bloom is as close as possible to the first in size and beauty.

The next step is to evaluate the root system. To do this I will always remove the plant from its pot to make sure it is still moving along and is healthy. No good blooms will come from a plant with a troubled root system. The roots need to be healthy so make sure everything looks ok and the orchid is taking on water. Without this you will get minimal blooms. So remove the plant from the pot. Look real close. If you find black or brown mushy root, remove them – all of them. If the roots are white, off-white and green you are okay… as is the plant.

There’s no telling how long the plant has been in that mix so it would be a good time to repot. As for the green-gray external roots hanging out of the pot, tuck them inside the pot. If they are too long for the pot, trim them down to size. For future reference, external roots are not necessarily indicative of a plant that needs repotting, but rather simply the nature of the plant. Once you get to this stage, simply take care of your orchid as you normally would and wait until it blooms again and simply enjoy the beauty.

A Chinese proverb says when you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one and a lily with the other. Flowers are the best creation of nature. Associated with beauty they have a lot of significance both in literature and in religion. Fresh cut flowers are considered to be auspicious in every religion. It is offered as an offering to god. They are also used in various other ways. They are used for decorations, used as ornaments by women. They are also used in decorating food items especially wedding cakes. Blossoms like lavender, rose, marigold and day lilies are used for this purpose. A list the beauty and uses of fresh cut flowers would be large indeed.

In ancient times fresh cut flowers were used by women as ornaments. They used them in garlands for beautification. Fresh cut flowers are beautiful to see and equally easy to maintain. It is always pleasant to see beautiful blooms at your home. Many options are available for decorating your house. Out of the countless varieties available some common ones to decorate your house with can be Daffodils, Roses, Lilies, Sunflower, Tulips and Zinnia. But again it is very depressing to see your favorite blossoms die in front of your eyes. So you need to take good care of them. There is nothing to worry about. It is very easy to preserve fresh cut flowers.

For preserving your blossoms you can simply follow a few rules. Always ensure that you get them early in the morning. The morning dew leaves them fresh. Have a nice, big vase to keep them, this way they get enough space to grow. Have your flowers nicely trimmed. To preserve them longer use 2 ounces of mouthwash solution to each gallon of water you will use in your vase. Don’t make the stems too short. Make them 1-2 inches short from the stem at a 45 degree angle. Don’t keep them near ripe fruits or direct sunlight. Ripe fruits release chemicals that wither them faster. Try to move them to a cooler place at night.

Fresh cut fruit gift baskets are something new and they are a wonderful alternative to sending flowers. While flowers are beautiful to look at, sending a fresh cut fruit basket is an edible delight. The fact that they can be delivered nationwide is also a huge selling point. You can order fresh cut fruit gift baskets online or over the phone in a matter of minutes. They are delivered right to the door of the recipient. There is no standing in line, shopping, driving, etc. All you do is place the order and then the gift is on its way. You can also place the order ahead of time and schedule a delivery date for a later time. These gift baskets are not too expensive. When you factor in the fact that you don’t have to drive around to get it and that you don’t have to stand in line or fight crowds, it makes an even more economical choice. In these economic times, it just makes sense to go with a gift that helps your budget. You can also order gift baskets of different sizes and they have gift baskets that will fit any budget.

Fresh fruit is a much healthier alternative to the traditional gift of candy or other sweets. Sending a fresh cut fruit gift basket can be a wonderful way to encourage someone who has made the decision to live a healthier lifestyle, lose weight, or otherwise change their eating habits. It also makes a great gift for any holiday, because it provides a healthy treat. Since these gift baskets are something relatively new, receiving one as a gift can be a pleasant surprise because it is such a unique gift. You can rest assured that the recipient will be on the phone thanking you and also calling friends and family and raving about how wonderful this gift is.

Sending one of these gift baskets to a child or teenager is also a great idea. Some children don’t enjoy eating fruit, but having the fruit delivered in such a unique and attractive fashion could be the incentive they need to start enjoying this healthy snack. Mom and dad would appreciate it, too. Sending fresh cut fruit gift baskets to an expectant mother or a new mother is also a fantastic idea. Pregnant women and new mothers need to watch what they eat and having fresh fruit delivered in this way will not only make them feel great because they know someone is thinking about them, it will also be a welcome treat.

Fresh cut flowers are those commonly found at your nearest florist. They come in a variety of colors and choices and you have the option to choose any variety of flowers of any color to make your own bouquet. As beautiful as fresh cut flowers are, it is quite unfortunate they do not last long. However, there are ways we can ensure that the flowers that we purchase lasts longer. The obvious tip is to choose the freshest flower. The secret is in the petal. Flowers with firm and ‘upright’ petals are considered to be freshest and make sure that you purchase flower buds or those that are just beginning to bloom.

The vase or container that you choose to place your flowers has to be clean and filled with cool or lukewarm water. Cut of the leaves from the stems from below the water line of your container and cut of one or two inches of the bottom stem to allow the flowers to absorb water easily. Flowers last longer in cool / cold atmosphere therefore do not leave the flowers overnight in warm rooms and do not place them near heat or heat generating appliances. Flowers in water tend to generate slime caused by bacteria. To avoid this, use a few drops of household bleach and a spoonful of sugar. Even though there are commercially produced flower foods available in the market, it is not as effective as the combination of bleach and sugar. Re-cut the bottom stems every few days to allow better water absorption and fill your vase or container with fresh water everyday.

For instance, bulb flowers like daffodils lasts longer if their stems are snipped across at an angle and by removing the sticky white secretion. Woody stem flowers like roses last longer if their bottom stems are crushed and split to allow them to absorb water easily. To stop tulips from slumping over, the bunch should be wrapped tightly with wet newspaper left in 2-3 inches of water for at least one and half hours. Then push small pins through the stems just below the flower heads and voila the flowers will be uprigh.

When a flower is cut from the plant, photosynthesis is no longer an option for the production of sugar. The sugar is needed to continue development of the flower bud into a flower. With this sugar, the flower will perform better in terms of size, color and vase life. While cut flowers will not photosynthesize, they will transpire. That is, water still is taken up by the stems and released into the air through the stomata. A turgid flower is a hydrated flower. A wilted flower is one where the cells do not have their full amount of water. The water in the vase or container can quickly become a bacteria soup. All it takes is a few stray pieces of plant tissue and some latent bacteria. Add some sugar from the preservative and you’ve got a recipe for cloudy, smelly water. The problem is not just an aesthetic one. Bacteria in the water will form plugs in the stem of the flower, blocking the water from flowing through the stem of the flower. A good floral preservative contains an antibacterial agent to stop all of this from happening.

Most packets are 5 gram packets which make one pint of solution. Most average vases hold at least one quart of water. If you do not follow the instructions for mixing the vase solution, and end up making a solution that is too weak, you may be providing enough sugar to grow bacteria while not providing enough antibacterial agents to stop the growth. This is a case where clear water with no preservative would be better than an improperly mixed solution. As soon as you notice that the water in your vase has started to become cloudy, it’s time to dump the water, rinse the stems, give them a clean cut and put them back in the cleaned vase with fresh water. This alone will double the life of your flowers.

Unfortunately, some flower distributors believe that the consumer’s initial perception is all that matters. They believe that the most important factor when choosing a preservative packet to distribute with their flowers is the price. They will not spend the extra three to five cents to provide the 10gram packet that should be provided. Instead, they believe that the consumer will be satisfied with any packet because they do not know any better. That shortsighted view means that consumer’s overall perception of flowers is that they do not last as long as they should, and the water gets dirty and smelly very quickly. In the long-run, these consumers may turn to alternate gift ideas other than flowers, and this hurts the floral industry as a whole.

Fresh flowers can brighten any room and are quickly becoming a feature in interior design. Fresh cut flowers are those commonly found at your nearest florist. They come in a variety of colors and choices and you have the option to choose any variety of flowers of any color to make your own bouquet. As beautiful as fresh cut flowers are, it is quite unfortunate they do not last long. This article will show some ways to take care of fresh cut flowers:

You must remove the flowers from the packaging, hold the stems underwater, and cut the stem at a 45-degree angle using a sharp knife. Cutting the flower at this angle allows the stem to have a greater surface area for water consumption. Do not use scissors to cut the stems and do not crush the stems either; this will damage the tips and block the flower’s water intake. Prepare the vase and the water. Kill any bacteria or algae that formed in the vase by cleaning the inside with bleach. If your florist does not include preservatives with the flower delivery, fill the vase with lukewarm water and add a floral preservative. You can either buy preservatives from your florist or make on your own. To make your own preservatives, mix lemon with a very small amount of bleach, or a teaspoon of sugar with a few drops of bleach. Take note that using homemade concoctions might not be as effective as professional cut flower food because they don’t contain the complex mixture of preservatives and nutrients flowers need to survive.

Before putting the flowers in the vase, remove all the leaves that might be submerged in the water. Leaves have the tendency to decay when submerged underwater and when these leaves rot, they poison the water and shorten the vase life of your flowers. Arrange the flowers in any way you desire, but make sure you do not overcrowd the vase. If the bouquet is too large or the arrangement seems too tight, divide them into two and place them in separate vases. Once you’re satisfied with your floral arrangement, keep the vase in a cool spot away from direct sunlight to avoid rapid respiration. Respiration is the process wherein living organisms age. It is helpful to note that flowers generally have a higher respiration rate than most agricultural crop. The lower the temperature of the room they are placed in, the longer the flowers will last. However, if the flowers are subjected to temperatures below four degrees, their internal cells can get easily damaged and dry out the flowers. If you want your bouquet to decorate an air-conditioned room, make sure the temperature is not too cold.

Take care of your flowers every day and remove wilted flowers so they do not contaminate the rest. It is recommended that you change the water daily but if you are too busy to do so, replacing the water every two or three days is fine. Make sure you add the preservative each time you change the water. You can also re-cut the stem for improved water absorption. Fresh cut flowers will bring spring right into your home. Taking care of cut flowers is not very difficult as long as you take the steps mentioned above. It does not take much time but you will feel the benefits for many days to come.
